Winter Flowers: Brightening Days and Celebrating the King's Birthday Long Weekend

Busy Bee Team 5 min read

June in Melbourne is properly cold. The days are short, the light is low, and there's a particular kind of grey that settles over the city for weeks at a time. It's the month people reach for their warmest jumpers, their heaviest blankets, and — if they're paying attention — their favourite florist. Because one of the most underrated things you can do in winter is bring fresh flowers into your home.

There's real science behind why it works. Studies consistently show that fresh flowers reduce stress, lift mood, and create a sense of calm in interior spaces. In winter, when outdoor colour is stripped back and natural light is scarce, that effect is more noticeable than at any other time of year.

Flowers That Thrive in June

Winter is kinder to cut flowers than summer is. The cooler temperatures mean arrangements last longer — sometimes almost twice as long as they would in the January heat. That's good news, both for your vase and your budget.

Roses are among the most reliably beautiful winter blooms. Deep reds, burnt oranges, and velvety burgundies feel naturally warm and seasonal, and they hold well in the cool air.

Proteas are bold, architectural, and unmistakably Australian. Their texture and structure make them work beautifully on their own or as the centrepiece of a mixed arrangement, and they last for weeks.

Gerberas bring the colour that winter tends to take away. A bunch of bright gerberas in yellow, coral, or magenta on a kitchen bench is a genuinely cheerful thing, and they ask for very little in return.

Lisianthus has a quiet elegance that suits the more restrained palette of winter. Their ruffled blooms in soft purples, whites, and pinks look sophisticated without being fussy.

Jonquils and daffodils, appearing through June and July, are bright yellow harbingers of the spring to come. They're fragrant, cheerful, and inexpensive — a perfect everyday flower.

Brightening Someone's Day

Winter is also the season when people are most likely to be feeling a bit flat — and a bunch of flowers is one of those gestures that reliably lifts spirits without making a big fuss of itself. You don't need a reason to send them. "Just because" is the best reason there is.

Think about someone who's been having a tough few weeks, a friend who works long hours and comes home to an empty flat, a colleague who hasn't seemed quite themselves lately. A bunch of flowers left at their door, or sent to their office, costs very little but communicates something that's surprisingly hard to say out loud: I was thinking about you.

The King's Birthday Long Weekend

The King's Birthday public holiday falls on the second Monday of June in Victoria — this year, that's the 9th of June 2026. It's a rare mid-year pause: a three-day weekend in the depths of winter when people tend to gather, catch up, and appreciate the small luxuries that busy weekdays don't usually allow time for.

It's a natural occasion for hosting a winter lunch or dinner, visiting family, or simply treating yourself and your home to something a little nicer than usual. A fresh arrangement for the dining table, or a bunch of seasonal blooms for the friend whose birthday you've been meaning to acknowledge — the long weekend creates the space to do those things well.

  • Hosting a long-weekend lunch: a low centrepiece of deep roses and proteas sits beautifully against a winter table setting.
  • Bringing a gift to a long-weekend dinner: a hand-tied bunch of seasonal blooms is always welcome and always personal.
  • Treating yourself: a large, generous bunch for your own living room — because winter is long and you deserve it.
